Such individuals feel disadvantaged for their ability not being formally recognized possibly then losing out on progressive opportunities. This transformation is supposedly directed towards promoting a highly modular and competitive education culture tolerating wide variety of contexts and styles of assessment but in actual fact it can serve to demotivate those who fail to gain access to such opportunities. I feel that the evolving structures of lifelong education have transformed learning opportunities to become not only competitive but also far more formal and complex. Only then can they establish their credibility for employ-ability and promotions. Hence, some of them embark on seeking self-actualization but end up falling victim to demands of employers for licensing and certification just so that their skills are formally recognized. The learners wanting to acquire further education after leaving colleges and universities are not only need to be intrinsically motivated and responsible for own learning but are also burdened with the task of finding the time and funding while taking care of their professional, personal and family responsibilities. I appreciate that underlying philosophy may be to facilitate screening for particular competencies but inevitably it ends up shaping barriers in employment to become barriers in learning. I remember my love for cause of education coming from teachers who never acquired formal licence to teach yet demonstrated their commitment to the profession through best of practices.The options available to learners today, to me, seem dominated by the preferential demands of the policy makers and employers who determine the kind of education, certification and training acceptable as a minimum for a particular job role. ![]() The process of starting afresh as entry level candidate was not only a setback but also demotivating to feel that all the professional years had gone unrecognized. ![]() There was no logical explanation for non-acceptance except it is not in the framework. I remember the frustration of trying to get my experience and post-graduate certificate recognized for a teaching licence. For those who end up with a different career aspiration to what they started off with, the only resort is to invest more time, effort and money in further sector specific training and education to seek the correct certification for recognition of credibility. Consequently, there exists a knowledge, skill and attitude gap between academics and employment. Not only are they expected to have the exact certification for the exact job role in the exact sector but are also expected to possess the attitudes and competencies that does not form part of the syllabus. As these young learners step into the practical world of employability, they find themselves lost in a wonderland. Educational institutions strive to equip young minds with baseline academic knowledge, skills and competencies but it is only with the passage of time, learners recognize their own strengths and skill set for a particular career goal. One learns throughout life from experience, interaction, exposure and communication almost inevitably. The philosophy of Lifelong learning has predominantly assumed life to be the ultimate institution of learning. A lot has been said and written on this play but from my experience of the prevailing context of lifelong education, I found it to be quite relevant. The film focuses on Rita's discontentment with her life in her working-class environment and her journey to self-discovery as she adapts to academia. Recently, I was watching Educating Rita a 1983 drama/comedy film directed by Lewis Gilbert based on a screenplay by Willy Russell. ![]()
